The curriculum prepares students for direct service delivery work to older adults and their families. Course work includes psychological, social, and physical aspects of the aging process; as well as methods to prevent and reduce substance misuse within the older adult population.
Program Learning Outcomes
Graduates will:
- Identify the knowledge, skills, and roles of a human service worker.
- Identify the aging process and its psychological, social, and physical aspects.
- Identify how substance use and misuse impacts the quality of life for the older adult.
- Demonstrate documentation skills used in case management.

Admission Information
Students applying for admission to the Gaston College Human Services Technology - Gerontology Certificate MUST meet all Gaston College admission requirements for GENERAL ADMISSION to the college.
- Complete Residency Determination
- Submit a Gaston College application
- Apply for financial aid
- Meet with an advisor and/or attend an information session
- Submit official high school (and college, if applicable) transcripts
- Provide proof of course placement requirements
Additional Program Requirements for Human Services Technology
- Have grades of “C” or better in all required program courses.
