Medical Office Administration - Document Specialist, A.A.S. (A25310DS)

The Medical Office Administration Document Specialist curriculum prepares individuals to become medical language specialists who interpret and transcribe dictation by physicians and other healthcare professionals in order to document patient care and facilitate delivery of healthcare services.

Students will gain extensive knowledge of medical terminology, pharmacology, human diseases, diagnostic studies, surgical procedures, and laboratory procedures. In addition to word processing skills and knowledge of voice processing equipment, students must master English grammar, spelling, and proofreading.

Graduates should qualify for employment in hospitals, medical clinics, doctors’ offices, private transcription businesses, research facilities, insurance companies, and publishing companies. Upon graduation, students may be eligible to sit for industry-recognized certification exams.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates will:

  1. Demonstrate proper use of medical terminology and abbreviations used in medical offices and medical information management systems.
  2. Demonstrate, identify and assess appropriate procedures and tasks performed in an office environment.
  3. Demonstrate, identify and assess appropriate procedures for creating, formatting, and transcribing medical office documents.

The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP) recognizes the Medical Office Administration-Document Specialist Associate in Applied Science Degree for accreditation.

Major course credits earned over five (5) years ago will not apply toward an associate degree in Medical Office Administration.

Students may complete up to two (2) hours credit from WBL courses.  Please contact the work-based learning office for more information.

Students completing the Gaston College Medical Office Administration-Document Specialist program may be eligible to sit for the National Healthcareer Association (NHA) Electronic Health Record Specialist (CEHRS) exam.  This is a national certification exam fully accredited by the National Commission for Certifying Agencies (NCCA).  For more information, visit http://www.nhanow.com/certifications.
