The Dietetic Technician Program prepares individuals to promote optimal health through proper nutrition by providing personalized services to meet client’s needs, and ensure balanced diets. Dietetic Technicians work under the supervision of a registered, licensed dietitian. Graduates of the Dietetic Technician program are eligible for the national registration examination for dietetic technicians.
There are two (2) components to the dietetic technician courses: online and supervised practice. All course work is offered online via the Internet. Gaston College allows students within a two-hour travel proximity to complete the supervised practice at Gaston College and facilities in the surrounding communities.
Employment opportunities include hospitals, correctional facilities, public health agencies, Meals on Wheels and community health programs, retirement centers, clinics, nursing homes, home healthcare programs, schools, child nutrition programs, wellness centers, medical offices, research facilities, food companies, contract food management companies, or foodservice vending and distribution operations.
Program Learning Outcomes
Graduates will:
- Communicate and perform effectively as a health care professional to a diverse population.
- Demonstrate knowledge of social, physical and biological sciences.
- Incorporate and apply the dietary guidelines in the provision of services to the general population.
- Demonstrate a general understanding of research as it applies to dietetics.
- Apply basic food preparation skills.
- Develop basic menus for conditions such as hypertension, obesity, and cardiac.
- Perform nutrition screening for at-risk population.
- Gather basic nutrition assessment information to assist the registered dietitian.
- Demonstrate knowledge of management principles required to deliver food and nutrition programs and services.
- Demonstrate knowledge of heath care systems and community setting that deliver nutrition services.

Accreditation Status
The Dietetic Technician Program at Gaston College received continual accreditation on April 22, 2006 from the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics (ACEND). ACEND is the accrediting agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics.

The Commission on Dietetic Registration is the credentialing agency for the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics. CDR also re-certifies Registered Dietitians (RD) and Dietetic Technicians, Registered (DTR)

Admission Information
Admission to the general college does not guarantee admission to the Dietetic Technician Program. Applicants applying for admission to the Gaston College Dietetic Technician Program MUST meet the Gaston College admission requirements.
Additional Requirements
To be eligible to submit an application to the Dietetic Technician Program applicants must:
- Complete all developmental coursework for writing, reading and math prior to entering the dietetic technician program.
- Acknowledge that travel “out-of-service” areas may be required for the supervised practice.
- Have an overall grade point average (GPA) of 2.0 or better in required general education courses.
- Have grades of “C” (80%) or better in all required dietetic courses.
- Have completed the required Biology and Chemistry courses within 10 years from the date of application to the program.
All above information must be provided and approved prior to enrollment in the program.
Program Admission Criteria
The following criteria will be utilized by the Dietetic Technician Admissions Committee in the selection process of recommending qualified applicants for admission to the Dietetic Technician Program:
- The total number of required general education courses completed (with a minimum grade of C) prior to submitting an application.
- GPA in required general education courses.
Admission points are calculated based on the above criteria. The final selection of applicants into the program is made by the Dietetic Technician Program Coordinator in consultation with the Dietetic Technician Admissions Committee.
Students Admitted to the Dietetic Technician Program
In addition to maintaining a 2.0 GPA in the general education courses and earning a minimum grade of “C” (80%) in all dietetic curriculum courses, applicants accepted into the program must meet the following requirements in order to enroll and continue in the program courses:
- Immunizations required by the N.C. Community College System and clinical agencies.
- Satisfactory physical and emotional health examination documented on a N.C. Community College Student Medical Form.
- Adult/Child/Infant (BLS) CPR
- Criminal background check.
- FBI Fingerprinting.
- Annual drug screen.
- Annual flu shot.
- Annual TB skin test. Students must complete a two-step PPD test within the last six (6) months.
- Hepatitis B Vaccine (recommended immunization) should be completed (series of three (3) injections) by the end of the spring semester, Freshman Year. Those students who do not pursue immunization of Hepatitis B will be required to sign a waiver releasing Gaston College and the Dietary Manager Certificate Program of any responsibility for the possibility of their contracting Hepatitis B.
