PHI 240 Introduction to Ethics (3 Credit Hours) Class Hours: 3 Lab Hours: 0 Clinical/Work Experience Hours: 0 Prerequisites: Take ENG 111 Corequisites: None This course introduces theories about the nature and foundations of moral judgments and applications to contemporary moral issues. Emphasis is placed on moral theories such as consequentialism, deontology, and virtue ethics. Upon completion, students should be able to apply various ethical theories to moral issues such as abortion, capital punishment, poverty, war, terrorism, the treatment of animals, and issues arising from new technologies.
Competencies
1. Engage in critical thinking about moral issues.
2. Identify, reconstruct and evaluate ethical arguments.
3. Analyze key ethical concepts.
4. Demonstrate understanding of major views in moral philosophy and how they relate to contemporary ethical and social issues. This course has been identified as a Universal General Education Transfer Component (UGETC) course under the North Carolina Comprehensive Articulation Agreement. Students completing courses designated as UGETC, with a C or higher, will receive equivalent general education course credit for those courses at the receiving UNC institution.
