The Medical Sonography curriculum provides knowledge and clinical skills in the application of high frequency waves to internal body structures.
Course work includes physics, cross-sectional anatomy, abdominal, introductory vascular, and obstetrical/gynecological sonography. Competencies are attained in identification of normal anatomy and pathological processes, use of equipment, fetal growth and development, integration of related imagining and patient interaction skills.
Medical Sonography Program Outcomes
The Medical Sonography Program at Gaston College is designed to prepare students for success as competent, compassionate, and ethical entry-level diagnostic medical sonographers. Upon completion of the program:
- Clinical Competence and Patient Care
Graduates will demonstrate competence in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains necessary to perform diagnostic medical sonography procedures safely, accurately, and with compassion for diverse patient populations.
- Technical and Analytical Proficiency
Graduates will apply knowledge of human anatomy and sectional anatomy, sonographic physics, Doppler ultrasound principles, and instrumentation to produce diagnostic-quality images, using critical thinking and problem-solving skills to assess and interpret findings.
- Professionalism and Ethical Practice
Graduates will exhibit professionalism, honesty, integrity, and accountability in all aspects of sonographic practice, maintaining ethical standards and promoting patient safety, confidentiality, and respect.
- Collaboration and Lifelong Learning
Graduates will function effectively as members of the interdisciplinary healthcare team and recognize the importance of lifelong learning, continued professional growth, and credential attainment within the medical imaging profession.
