Social and Human Services, A.A.S. (A45380)


The Social and Human Services curriculum prepares students for entry-level positions in institutions and agencies that provide social, community, and behavioral health services. Along with core courses, students take courses that prepare them for specialization in specific human services areas.

Coursework includes the development of professional knowledge, skills, and values in human services. Opportunities for experiential learning allowing students to apply knowledge and skills learned in the classroom.

Graduates should qualify for positions in government, private, and nonprofit social and human services agencies. Graduates may choose to transfer and continue their education at a variety of colleges and universities.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates will:

1. Explain and apply ethical standards, including professional codes of conduct, confidentiality standards, and ethical decision-making within the human services profession.

2. Analyze the historical development of the social and human services profession and explain how historical influences shape current practices.

3. Apply effective communication and interpersonal skills to interact with supervisors, peers, and clients in social and human services settings.

4. Assess client needs and apply critical thinking to connect clients with appropriate community resources and services.

5. Evaluate how self-care, self-awareness, and personal wellness influence the professional-client relationship in social and human services practice.

6. Demonstrate culturally responsive practice and advocacy skills to address the needs and rights of diverse clients within community and social systems.

7. Integrate professional knowledge and skills required for effective practice in social and human services.

Admission Information


Students applying for admission to this program MUST meet all Gaston College admission requirements for General Admission to the College. In addition, students will need to demonstrate college readiness for English and math as exhibited through the college placement test, a placement test waiver, or completion of the acceptable coursework. Your academic advisor will be able to assist you in determining your college readiness. 

For students interested in applying to this program at Gaston College, please note that there is limited enrollment and participates in a selective admission criteria process to select the most qualified applicants for admission. Students will need to make an appointment with their Admissions Specialist/Advisor in order to review admission requirements and to verify if the student has met selective admission criteria in order to submit an application by the deadline.
