This curriculum is designed to prepare students for careers in the Health Sciences.

Students will complete general education courses that provide a foundation for success in nursing and allied health curricula. Students may select a career pathway that will prepare them for an entry level position in health care. Courses may also provide foundational knowledge needed in the pursuit of advanced health science degrees or programs.

Graduates should qualify for an entry-level job associated with the program major, such as Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) or Advanced Emergency Medical Technician (AEMT), Medical Assistant, Nurse Aide, Pharmacy Technician, Phlebotomist, or Massage Therapist dependent upon the selected program major.

Nurse Aide: The Nurse Aide curriculum prepares individuals to work under the supervision of licensed nursing professionals in performing nursing care and services for persons of all ages. Topics include: growth and development, personal care, vital signs, communication, nutrition, medical asepsis, therapeutic activities, accident and fire safety, household environment and equipment management, family resources and services, and employment skills. Upon completion, students should be able to demonstrate knowledge and skills and safe performance of skills necessary to be eligible for listing on the North Carolina Nurse Aide I & Nurse Aide II Registry.

Program Learning Outcomes

Graduates will:

  1. Complete General education courses required for entry into chosen health field.
  2. Demonstrate knowledge of the role and awareness of the scope of practice for Nurse Aide I and II in North Carolina.
  3. Demonstrate mastery of skills required by Division of Health Services Regulation (DHSR), North Carolina Board of Nursing (NCBON), and North Carolina Community College System (NCCCS) for education of nurse aides in North Carolina.

Admission Information


Students applying for admission to the Gaston College Therapeutic and Diagnostic Program MUST meet all Gaston College admission requirements. In addition, students will need to complete an additional application for entrance to the program.

  1. Complete Residency Determination
  2. Submit a Gaston College application
  3. Apply for financial aid
  4. Meet with an advisor and/or attend an information session
  5. Submit official high school (and college, if applicable) transcripts
  6. Provide proof of course placement requirements

Additional Program Requirements Upon Admission

  • A completed Gaston College Health and Human Services Student Medical form documenting satisfactory emotional and physical health signed by a health care practitioner.
  • The documentation of additional non-academic criteria includes criminal background checks, urine drug testing, and proof of immunizations. Students are to complete these requirements by registering and paying a fee to a third party vendor. Instructions will be provided by the compliance specialist.
  • Clinical agencies reserve the right to deny a student access to the facility based on failure to meet the above requirements. Requirements are subject to change by the clinical agency.
  • Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from all clinical, laboratory, and class activities. Clinical experiences may be scheduled afternoons, evenings, or weekends at various clinical sites. Clinical experiences that do not fall into these time frames will be scheduled with adequate notice given to students for planning purposes.
  • Professional liability insurance (malpractice insurance) is arranged through the Gaston College Business Office.

These requirements apply to the NAS 101 and NAS 102 courses only.

Course Grading

A class average of 80% or greater along with successful lab demonstration is necessary to attend the clinical portion of the nurse aide curriculum. Students who are unable to achieve an average of 80% or greater and/or successful lab demonstration will not be allowed to participate in clinical practice and will receive a failing grade in the class. A final course grade of 80% or greater is required to pass the class.
