Curriculum Description
The cosmetology curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills.
Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other selected topics.
Graduates should qualify to sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. Employment is available in beauty salons and related businesses.
Program Learning Outcomes:
- Students will competently demonstrate the use of safety and infection control practices as they perform client services.
- Students will be able to conduct cosmetic services successfully by applying Professional Ethics.
- Students will competently develop cosmetology skills including hairstyling, haircutting, chemical applications, various hair color services, wet setting, thermal styling, ethnic hairstyling, manicures, pedicures, artificial nails, artificial hair, and skin care services.
- Cosmetology students must pass a mock final examination of the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetics examination prior to completing of the program.

Admission Information
Students applying for admission to the Gaston College Cosmetology program MUST meet the following requirements for GENERAL ADMISSION to the college: - Submit to the Admissions Office a completed Application for Admission.
- Request that your high school mail an official high school transcript to the Admissions Office at Gaston College, 201 Highway 321 South, Dallas, NC 28034-1499. The documentation listed below can be submitted in the place of a traditional high school transcript.
- Official Adult High School Transcript
- Official copies of GED scores
- Official transcript from International Correspondence School
- Official transcript from Home School
- Official transcript from a regionally accredited college or university reflecting an Associate Degree or higher
- Request that all colleges from where credit was received submit official transcripts.
- Schedule and take the COMPASS Placement Test. The placement test evaluates skills in reading, writing and math. The placement test may not be required of any person who has scored 500 on the verbal or critical reading section and 520 on the math section of the SAT or who has a composite score of 21 on the English section and 21 on the math section of the ACT. (All test scores must be less than five years old.) A transfer student who has earned a “C” in both college level math and college level English from a regionally accredited institution shall have the test waived.
- Attend a New Student Orientation. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a Gaston College Application for Admission at least six weeks prior to enrolling to ensure that their information is processed. Though applicants may enroll for one semester without submitting transcripts and test scores, this information facilitates advising and smooth registration. Applicants must meet all admission requirements before enrolling for the second semester. Applicants who decide to enroll during a later semester are responsible for contacting the Admissions Office to ensure their start semester is updated.
- International students must meet all admission requirements listed under General Admission Requirements. Proof of English proficiency is required. This may be established by making a minimum score of 540 (207 on the computer) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
- Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
- Individuals who have been convicted of a felony will be required to complete a pre-application review by the NC Cosmetic Arts Board prior to making application for a license to practice in the state of North Carolina.
ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS TO BE ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION TO THE COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM: - Must have an overall grade point average of 2.0 or better in required college courses.
- Must have grades of “C” or better in all related courses.
Total Required Minimum Semester Hours Credit: 48

Upon completion of these requirements the student is eligible for a diploma and may apply for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. |
