Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate (C55120)

Basic Law Enforcement Training (BLET) is designed to give students essential skills required for entry-level employment as law enforcement officers with state, county or municipal government, or with private enterprise.

Students who successfully complete the BLET program at Gaston College are awarded 12 credit hours towards the Associate in Criminal Justice Technology degree.

Program Learning Outcomes:

Graduates will:

  1. Be able to demonstrate a basic understanding of legal issues required to be a beginning level police officer.
  2. Be able to demonstrate proper patrol techniques required to be a beginning level police officer.
  3. Be able to demonstrate the basic communication skills required to be a beginning level police officer.
  4. Be able to demonstrate proper investigative techniques required to be a beginning level police officer.
  5. Be able to demonstrate acceptable practical skills required to be a beginning level police officer.
  6. Be able to demonstrate the sheriff specific duties required to be a beginning level police officer.

Admission Requirements:


  1. Student must be twenty (20) years old at the time of course registration.
  2. Student must be a high school graduate or equivalent.
  3. Student is required to have a personal interview with the Criminal Justice Academy Director.
  4. Student should present a letter of recommendation or sponsorship from the chief/sheriff of a police department, but not a requirement.
  5. Student must present a clean criminal record report (no felonies).
  6. Student must complete a COMPASS Placement Test administered by the staff of Gaston College prior to enrollment. Contact the Admissions Office at 704-922-6214 for an appointment to schedule your test.
  7. Student must possess a valid driver’s license.

*Priority admission is granted to those individuals holding full-time employment with criminal justice agencies.
