Curriculum Description

The cosmetology curriculum is designed to provide competency-based knowledge, scientific/artistic principles, and hands-on fundamentals associated with the cosmetology industry. The curriculum provides a simulated salon environment which enables students to develop manipulative skills.

Course work includes instruction in all phases of professional imaging, hair design, chemical processes, skin care, nail care, multi-cultural practices, business/computer principles, product knowledge, and other selected topics.

Graduates should qualify to sit for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license. Employment is available in beauty salons and related businesses.

Program Learning Outcomes:

  1. Students will competently demonstrate the use of safety and infection control practices as they perform client services.
  2. Students will be able to conduct cosmetic services successfully by applying Professional Ethics.
  3. Students will competently develop cosmetology skills including hairstyling, haircutting, chemical applications, various hair color services, wet setting, thermal styling, ethnic hairstyling, manicures, pedicures, artificial nails, artificial hair, and skin care services.
  4. Cosmetology students must pass a mock final examination of the North Carolina State Board of Cosmetics examination prior to completing of the program.

Admission Information


Students applying for admission to the Gaston College Cosmetology program MUST meet the following requirements for GENERAL ADMISSION to the college:

  1. Submit to the Gaston College Office of  Admissions a completed Application for Admission.
  2. Request that your high school mail an official high school transcript to the  Gaston College Office of Admissions, 201 Highway 321 South, Dallas, NC 28034-1499. The documentation listed below can be submitted in the place of a traditional high school transcript.
    1. Official Adult High School Transcript
    2. Official copies of GED scores
    3. Official transcript from International Correspondence School
    4. Official transcript from Home School
    5. Official transcript from a regionally accredited college or university reflecting an Associate Degree or higher
  3. Request that all colleges from where credit was received submit official transcripts.
  4. Schedule and take the COMPASS Placement Test. The placement test evaluates skills in reading, writing and math. Students who score 500 or higher on the Verbal or Critical Reading portion of the SAT are not required to take the Written and Reading portions of the placement test. Students who score 500 or higher on the Mathematics portion of the SAT or not required to take the Mathematics portion of the placement tests. Official test scores results must be no more than five years old and they must be received and evaluated by the Gaston College Office of Admissions. Students who score and 18 are higher on the English portion of the ACT will be exempted from the Writing portion of the college's placement test. Students who score a 21 or higher on the Reading portion of the ACT will be exempted from the Reading portion of the college's placement test. Students who score a 22 or higher on the Mathematics portion of the ACT will be exempted from the Math portion of the college's placement test. Official test score results must be no more than five years old and they must be received and evaluated by the Gaston College Office of Admissions.
  5. Attend a New Student Orientation fro Gaston College. Applicants are strongly encouraged to submit a Gaston College Application for Admission at least six weeks prior to enrolling to ensure that their information is processed. Though applicants may enroll for one semester without submitting transcripts and test scores, this information facilitates advising and smooth registration. Applicants must meet all admission requirements before enrolling for the second semester. Applicants who decide to enroll during a later semester are responsible for contacting the Gaston College Office of Admissions to ensure their start semester is updated.
  6. International students must meet all admission requirements listed under General Admission Requirements. Proof of English proficiency is required. This may be established by making a minimum score of 540 (207 on the computer) on the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL).
  7. Applicants must be at least 18 years old.
  8. Individuals who have been convicted of a felony will be required to complete a pre-application review by the N.C. Cosmetic Arts Board prior to making application for a license to practice in the state of North Carolina.

ADDITIONAL REQUIREMENTS TO BE ELIGIBLE TO SUBMIT AN APPLICATION TO THE COSMETOLOGY PROGRAM:

  1. Must have an overall grade point average of 2.0 or better in required college courses. 
  2. Must have grades of “C” or better in all related courses.

Upon completion of these requirements the student is eligible for a diploma and may apply for the State Board of Cosmetic Arts examination. Upon successfully passing the State Board exam, graduates will be issued a license.
